When a football table has been built for use in a commercial environment it will often have a glass top that encloses the playfield. This way the players are unable to take the ball out of the table without paying first.

This feature can also be effective on tables that have been set to freeplay but are being used in communal areas. It can reduce the number of “lost” balls.
