Despite the almost unlimited variety of colour and style choices available on the pool table market, the way in which a table is actually constructed can be broadly split into two distinct groups ‘MDF Bed or Slate Bed’.

To help get some clarification between the two groups it’s worth understanding that a commercial standard pool table  you may have played on in a pub or club will inevitably have had a play surface made from a piece of slate. Conversely if you have ever seen a table in someone’s home that can be easily moved, has folding legs, or generally looks like it would not survive in a commercial environment, then you were probably looking at a table built around a play surface constructed from a sheet of MDF board.

As the trend towards private home games rooms gained pace through the late 90s, the demand for home pool tables to perform in a comparable way to those found in the local pub or club increased dramatically. The pool table manufactures reacted to this demand and began stripping out the complicated and cumbersome internal mechanisms required for coin operation.

With pay to play now subject to requirement pool table designers were given a fresh canvass to get creative. You can now find slate bed tables that convert in to dining tables and models with such slim bodies that they will fit into the most inaccessible of home spaces. Where once slate bed tables were heavy and basic by their very nature, we now find them being given pride of place in people’s homes.
