These dimensions are dictated by the International Table Tennis Federation for global competition use. Smaller tables are available for recreational use by younger players, or in smaller spaces.
An outdoor table tennis table will have been weatherproofed during manufacture, using a range of corrosion-resistant materials. The play surface will be coated to protect against moisture or UV rays, and the chassis will be rust-proofed and deliberately heavy for stability in wind. Indoor tables lack these features and should not be used or stored outside.
You should look for a thick play surface for the best bounce and ball performance. You should also decide whether you need an indoor or an outdoor table, and consider space-saving functions like quick-folding systems, accessory storage and fitted castor wheels.
Full-size indoor table tennis tables from a reputable brand start at around £300, whilst outdoor tables start at around £350. The more you pay, the better the game experience will be, and the more special functions will be built in. Table tennis tops start at around £100.
