The bed of a pool table is the flat surface that makes up the playfield. It is fitted with a cloth and cushions.
MDF is formed by pressing wood fibres together, joining them together with a resin binder. The compression squeezes air out, and makes the surface very flat and even. This is why MDF makes a very good pool table bed.
One of the big advantages of an MDF bed is weight. MDF is much lighter than slate, so you’ll find MDF beds in our folding and kids' pool table sections. It’s also cheaper to produce than slate, which keeps retail prices affordable.
Generally, MDF tables don’t offer gameplay of the same standard as slate tables. But technology has advanced in recent years, and some premium MDF bed tables can offer a game that is almost as good as slate. Read more about the differences between MDF and slate bed tables in our guide.
